If you are pharma companies or distributors/chemists etc who are engaged in sales, purchase or manufacturing of any product that fall under nutraceuticals, food supplements and dietary supplements, then you also need to take FSSAI license or registration.

If you are in business of ASU (Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani) Medicines then some online portals may also ask for FSSAI license/registration at their portal during registration process of your business to sell your asu products.

Why FSSAI license is required?

FSSAI license is necessary to register of all food businesses in India, so, FSSAI can ensure security and safety of food products and regulate all food businesses present in India. 

It helps to maintain that all necessary requirements are fulfilled by Food Business and ensures the safety of food products supplied or manufactured by various establishments in India and food you are consuming is of good standards.

01 - Dairy products and analogues, excluding products of food category 2.0
02 - Fats and oils, and fat emulsions
03 - Edible ices, including sherbet and sorbe
04 - Fruits and vegetables (including mushrooms and fungi, roots and tubers, fresh pulses and legumes, and aloe vera), seaweeds, and nuts and seeds
05 – Confectionery
06 - Cereals and cereal products, derived from cereal grains, from roots and tubers, pulses,legumes and pith or soft core of plam tree, excluding bakery wares of food category 7.0
07 - Bakery products
08 - Meat and meat products, including poultry and game
09 - Fish and fish products, including molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms
10 - Eggs and egg products
11 - Sweeteners, including honey
12 - Salts, spices, soups, sauces, salads and protein products
13 - Foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses
14 - Beverages, excluding dairy products
100 - Standardised Food Product excluding those covered under category 1-14
18- Indian Sweets and Indian Snacks & Savouries products

Fssai logo on food products

There are three types of Logo is issued by Fssai to recognize different types of food.
Brown Logo : Brown Logo indicates food contains one or more ingredients that are non vegetarian in nature.
Green Logo : Green Logo indicates all ingredients present in food product are of vegetarian nature.
Vegan Logo : It is used for Vegan Foods. vegan foods are those that have not been made using 'any ingredients, additives and processing aids of animal origin including milk and milk products, fish, poultry and meat, egg or egg products, honey or honey bee products, materials of insect origin like silk, dyes, chitin/chitosan etc or ingredients that are clarified using animal-sourced products e.g., bone char used in sugar bleaching, isinglass in clarifying beer etc.

How to check fssai license number on label?

Fssai license number is indicated at food product lable after Fssai logo. You can check for Fssai logo and 14 digit license number will be followed by it.

Is fssai license mandatory?

Fssai license is mandatory for all food business operators in India. Conducting any business related to food with fssai license or registration is punishable offence.
